From the Founder: How I Turned My Passion for Fitness and Mobile Experiences Into a Treadmill Workout App

Introduction

Welcome to Push Training, the #1 app on the App Store fully dedicated to treadmill interval runs. I’m Jacob, a fitness enthusiast and former Google engineer. I created Push Training because I used to dread most cardio and wanted a way to truly enjoy the treadmill experience, not just hop on with steady cardio and a playlist on shuffle.

How It Got Started

As someone who spends a significant amount of their day at a desk, I recognize the importance of physical activity and have been passionate about regularly going to the gym for a number of years. Despite frequently exercising, cardio always seemed like a chore—especially running on a treadmill. That changed when I took a running class and found myself engaged and challenged by a coach guiding me through different workout intervals.

The Need for Personalization

I started looking for an app that would provide this experience, but came up empty handed. There are many on-demand workout apps available today, but they generally either focus on a simple timer, or specialize in running plans for those training for an outdoor race, or they focus on the big production with celebrity coaches.

I just wanted an app that would guide me thorough a great workout, giving me the exact cues for my running abilities. Bonus points if it came with solid coaching and music that also adapted to my taste!

The Concept

I set out to create Push Training—a new approach that dynamically combines workouts, coaching, and music for each user. The workout difficulty, coaching, and music selections are intelligently customized for each workout the user completes. This allows the user to take the same run multiple times while ensuring the workout is still engaging, challenging, and unique.

The user selects a workout from the dozens of expertly-curated interval-based sessions, which include different durations and objectives. From there, each training interval is adapted, based on the user’s Personal Best.
  2. The user's personal audio coach speaks directly to them, providing the user with unique insights and feedback based on their workout progress, personal best, and other metrics. Imagine having a personal coach right in your ear, ensuring you stay focused and engaged.
  3. Music is dynamically selected for each user based on their preferences and intelligently paired with each workout interval based on intensity. It’s like having a personal DJ create the perfect workout mix for you… every time.
